What happens when you do not start your car for a while?

Most of the cars are parked at home, car parks, or even at roadside. Here is a rundown of the things that could happen to your car when you leave it alone untouched for 15 days or more.

  1. The car exterior will become dusty in just a few days.
  2. Car battery dead or flat battery.
  3. Tires will deflate and degrade.
  4. Insect infestation is possible.

The problems can be avoided with car maintenance tips as following:

Car battery care tips you need to know:

  1. Start the car and Rev or just drive the car!

Car battery is an important component in a car’s electrical system. Car battery life depends on its care and performance. Usually in Malaysia, consumers change car batteries every two years or most of them change car battery when they are having a flat battery. Car battery main purpose is to provide an electric current to the electric-powered starting engine. Once the engine is running, power for the car’s electrical systems is still supplied by the battery, with the alternator charging the battery as demands increase or decrease. When the car is not in use for a long period of time, the battery power will be reduced. That is mainly because the car battery still powering your car’s alarm system, computer systems, and any other electrical features it has on board. Plus, you need to be aware that heat or hot weather can also cause your battery to lose its charge faster. Moreover, Lead-acid car battery naturally lose charge over time. This is normal and is referred to as self-discharge. Thus, battery flat will happen.

A common thought is that regularly starting the car and leave the engine to idle will charge the battery. This method is not good enough, especially on modern cars with the high electrical load.

If you are not driving the car, the car engine needs to be started at least 2 times a week. Rev until 2000 RPM for 5 minute and let the car engine run for another 10 minutes.

From the experience of MCO 1.0 and MCO 2.0, some other creative ways that Malaysian has done to charge the car battery and prevent flat battery. One of the examples is keep looping on the road around your house in the same “Taman”. You will not be fined for driving your car around your house. But please do not do this during the night-time as you do not want to get complaint from your neighbour.

If you are staying in a condominium or not landed property, then drive around in the open-air parking area within the car park building. Keep looping on the parking floor at least 30 minutes.

From the above ways, you also can drive your cars when you go out to buy necessities.

  1. Check the battery water

For the conventional type of car battery, check water level of the battery at least once a week. If the water is less, please adding battery water (distilled water). For maintenance free battery, you do not need to check the battery water because the maintenance free battery is not required to add battery water.

  1. Clean the top of your car battery including battery terminals.

It is important to make sure the battery terminals are clean, tight, and free of corrosion so they can function properly. For an at-home cleaning solution, mix 15 ml of baking soda with 250 ml of boiling water. Use an old toothbrush with the mixture to scrub the terminals clean. Safety Reminder! Make sure your car is not running and has cooled down sufficiently before you start cleaning the battery terminals.

Other car maintenance tips that you need to know:

  1. Parking in a covered car park

Extreme heat is especially hard on car battery because it increases the evaporation of water for both conventional and maintenance free battery. Reduce exposure to heat by parking in the shade or a covered area whenever possible.

  1. Check your tyre air pressure.

Insufficient tyre pressure affects driving, handling, acceleration, and braking performance. So, the tyre will have a big impact on safety while driving. Do check your tyre pressure if there is a need to go out. Your car tyres might develop a flat spot if it is parked at the same spot for a long time. Move your car front and back alternately to rotate the tyres.

  1. Lift or straighten the wipers.

Lift the car wiper to prevent the rubber from hardening.

  1. Make sure the lights work properly.

Do check your signal light, brake light, and headlamp lights if there is a need to go out.
